How will the eclipses affect us? – Analysis By Vinayak Bhatt

Two more eclipses are due in this year 2007, one to be seen on 28th August and the second on the 11th September, both happening within a gap of 15 days. The first one would be the second Total Lunar Eclipse, earlier already happened on 3/4 March 2007. It is a rare event, since it is the first Central Total Eclipse after the year 2000. The other one is a Partial Solar Eclipse.

An Eclipse is the partial or total disappearance of a celestial body in the shadow cast by another or when the light is obscured. While rotating on its axis, the earth is revolving round the Sun. For an observer on the Earth, it appears that the celestial sphere is rotating. As a natural satellite of the Earth, the Moon is also revolving round the Sun along with the Earth. During this phenomenon, there is a chance that all the three celestial bodies viz. Sun, Moon and Earth fall on the same plane and line. Either the Earth or the Moon will come into the way of the other, obscuring the light from Sun, thereby forming the Eclipse. This is a temporary phenomenon. Sun gets eclipsed on a New Moon day and Moon gets eclipsed on Full Moon day.

The first one would be the second Total Lunar Eclipse, earlier already happened on 3/4 March 2007. It is a very significant event, since it is the first Central Total Eclipse after the year 2000. The other one is a Partial Solar Eclipse.

In Brihat Samhita, Sage Varahamihira says:

“Somagrahe Nivrutthe Pakshanthe Yadi Bhaveth Grahorkasyal Tatra nayaha Pragnanam Dampathyor Vyram anyonyam”I I

Should a Solar Eclipse occur at the end of the fortnight after a lunar eclipse, people would become unruly and unjust in their behaviour and couples would be at their logger-heads.

Total Lunar Eclipse

The Eclipse occurs on 28 August 2007 at the ascending node of Lunar’s orbit in Southern Aquarius in the Satabisha Constellation in the bright half of the lunar month Sravana.

Since the Moon is 2.6 days shy of Perigee (Point in the orbit of the Moon), it will appear 8% larger than it was during March 2007 eclipse. The Moon’s trajectory takes it deep into the Southern Umbral shadow, resulting in a Total eclipse that lasts 90 minutes. The penumbral phase of eclipse begins at about 07:54 UT, but most observers will not be able to visually detect the shadow, till about 08:30 UT (UT-Universal Time. It is the Greenwich Mean Time beginning at midnight)

Major phases of eclipse are as under:

Penumbral          Eclipse begins at               07:53:39UT

The Moon’s paths through Earth’s shadows as well as map illustrating worldwide visibility of the event are shown in Figure (1).

According to Brihat Samhita, eclipses in Airy and Fixed sign (Aquarius) would set forth cyclones, plane crashes and disputes with other States. As the Eclipse occurring in human sign, bad effects are possible on the people. Aquarius being the 6th house in the eclipse horoscope, matters relating to Health Centres, epidemics, diseases prevention and control, public health, health services, surgery, labour disputes etc. affect as a whole in the world.

Only the ending of the partial phase of the lunar eclipse on 28 August 2007 will be visible at some places at the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, and extreme North-eastern parts of India. Moon will be near the eastern horizon and the eclipse will end at 17 hrs. 54mts. I.S.T.
